Mercedes-Benz has recalled 144,049 vehicles from the U.S. market after discovering an issue with the digital instrument cluster. This was confirmed by documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recalled models include the AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, SL-Class, CLE-Class, and GLC-Class. According to NHTSA documentation, the software defect affects the entire production range of the listed models.
More specifically, the issue was traced to the software of the infotainment control unit. As stated in the documents, in an attempt to protect itself from system malfunctions, the control unit may reboot the system more frequently than intended, which can temporarily disable the digital instrument cluster display. This increases the risk of accidents, as the driver temporarily loses access to critical driving information.
There is no warning mechanism before the malfunction occurs. If the system restarts, the instrument cluster remains unavailable for a short period until the reboot is completed.
Although the issue is software-related, the solution is relatively simple. Owners and dealers of affected vehicles are being notified in stages to bring the recalled models to authorized Mercedes-Benz service centers, where technicians will update the infotainment control unit software.
