What Is a VIN Code and What Information Does It Contain About a Vehicle?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code assigned to a vehicle. It contains essential information about the vehicle’s make, model, year and place of manufacture, as well as its key technical specifications.

The VIN code serves several important purposes. First and foremost, it is used to identify the vehicle itself and help establish its ownership. In the event of theft, criminals often change a vehicle’s license plates. However, the vehicle’s true identity can still be established, allowing it to be returned to its owner, by verifying its VIN. Law enforcement and investigative authorities regularly use this method.
In addition, the VIN code is a buyer’s primary safeguard when purchasing a used vehicle. It allows you to check whether a vehicle has been reported stolen or whether the seller is attempting to conceal evidence of a serious accident or previous damage.
This unique number is displayed in several locations on a vehicle. Most commonly, it can be found in the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side, on a label attached to the driver’s door frame, or in the vehicle’s registration documents.
Each character has a specific meaning, and understanding how to interpret them helps us obtain detailed and comprehensive information about a vehicle.
The first character - indicates the country of manufacture. For example, 1, 4 and 5 represent the United States, while 2 represents Canada. The digits 8 and 9 are associated with South America. The letters A through H represent African countries, J through R represent Asian countries, and S through Z represent European countries. The second and third characters identify the manufacturer and brand. For example, FA, FM and FB are associated with Ford, G with General Motors, J with Jeep, and A or C with Chrysler, among others.
Characters four through eight - contain information about the vehicle’s model, engine displacement and type, and other specifications. The ninth character - is a check digit used to verify the validity of the VIN. The tenth character - indicates the model year. For example, A can represent 1980 or 2010, while Y represents 2000. The digits 1 through 9 are used to indicate model years from 2001 through 2009. The eleventh character - identifies the assembly plant where the vehicle was manufactured. The final six digits form the vehicle’s unique serial number.
Understanding and correctly interpreting a VIN code enables any driver to obtain reliable, objective and comprehensive information about their own vehicle or one they are considering purchasing.
